How ABA therapy insurance coverage works

If you’re wondering whether insurance covers ABA therapy in Colorado, you’re not alone, and by the time most families ask, they’ve already been through evaluations, waitlists, and more paperwork than anyone should have to manage while also worrying about their child’s future. The last thing you need is insurance stress layered on top of all of that.

At Achieve ABA Therapy Group, we take on the complicated parts so you don’t have to become an insurance expert just to get your child the support they need. Here’s what that looks like in practice: we verify your benefits before you commit to anything, we submit and follow up on every authorization ourselves, we walk you through your actual costs upfront, and when claims or appeals get complicated, we’re the ones dealing with the insurance company, not you.

Here's how we do it, step by step:

We check everything first

Tell us about your plan, and we'll find out exactly what's covered before you commit to anything. No surprises partway through treatment.

We handle authorization

Most Colorado insurance plans require prior authorization before ABA therapy can begin. We submit the paperwork, follow up with your insurance company, and respond to any requests for more information.

We explain your real costs

Before your child's first session, you'll know what insurance covers and what you're responsible for. Clear numbers, explained plainly, with nothing that surprises you later.

We manage the paperwork

Claims, follow-up calls, resubmissions, and appeals when coverage gets denied. We handle it so you don't have to.

We’re not working on abstract goals but on the things you need to change.

What happens during sessions

What your ABA therapy insurance benefits include

Most families watch their kid get better during sessions, then everything falls apart when therapy ends because nobody taught them how to keep it going. That’s heartbreaking and it shouldn’t happen.

We teach you the exact same strategies we teach your child. Every week you get coaching where you practice with real situations in your home. Here’s what changes for you:

Initial assessment

Before therapy begins, your BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst — the clinician who leads your child's care) evaluates your child's strengths and needs and builds an individualized treatment plan. It's typically covered, not an out-of-pocket cost.

In-home ABA therapy

One-on-one sessions in your home, working on communication, behavior, social skills, and daily living skills. Practicing where your child actually lives helps new skills carry over into real life.

BCBA supervision

A behavior analyst oversees every session — directing the care and guiding the therapist, so your child is never just left alone with a technician. This oversight is covered separately from the therapy hours.

School support

Coordination with your child's teachers so the skills they build in therapy stay consistent at school and carry through the rest of their day.

Progress monitoring

Your BCBA tracks session data and adjusts the plan as your child grows, keeping therapy moving toward their goals.

Coverage varies by plan. We’ll walk you through exactly what yours includes — and what it doesn’t — so there are no surprises.

Learning more about autism and support

How to make the most of your ABA therapy insurance benefits

If you’re looking to understand autism better or explore Colorado services, these resources provide solid information and support networks for families.

Before you get started

Have your insurance card ready, front and back. Bring your child's autism diagnosis paperwork if you already have it. Ask us about any additional documentation your plan might require.

During treatment

We track your authorization period and submit renewal requests before it expires. We keep you updated on your coverage throughout your child's therapy.

We'll talk through payment plan options and help you find a solution that works for your family. Very few families end up unable to access services because of cost.

Families on Medicaid may also qualify for additional waiver support

You focus on your child. We focus on making sure insurance doesn’t slow you down.

FAQ

FAQs about ABA therapy insurance coverage in Colorado

Is ABA therapy covered by insurance in Colorado?

Yes, in most cases. Colorado requires most health insurance plans to cover autism spectrum disorder treatment, including ABA therapy. What you personally pay depends on your plan. Some families pay nothing beyond their regular premium, while others have a copay, deductible, or coinsurance. We’ll find out exactly what your plan requires before you spend anything.

We currently accept Health First Colorado, CHP+, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, UMR, Select Health, ChampVA, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, Colorado Community Health Alliance, and Colorado Access. If your plan isn’t listed, reach out anyway.

It varies based on your specific plan, deductible, and coinsurance. Some families pay very little out of pocket, while others have a larger share depending on their coverage. We’ll give you real numbers before your child’s first session, not just an estimate.

This depends on your child’s needs and your specific plan. We request the hours your child’s assessment supports and let you know what gets approved.

Some plans require one and some don’t. We’ll tell you what yours needs and help you gather any required paperwork.

We help you appeal with additional documentation from your child’s evaluation and our clinical team. Many denials can be resolved with the right information submitted the right way.

It varies by insurance company. We stay on top of the process and keep you updated the whole way through.

ABA therapy authorizations are typically approved for a set period at a time. We track your authorization and submit renewal requests before it runs out, so there’s no gap in your child’s care.

In most cases, yes. ABA therapy is generally considered a qualified medical expense, though it’s worth confirming the specifics with your plan administrator.

Reach out anyway. We’ll talk through self-pay rates, payment plan options, and any programs that might help with cost.

Sometimes. Some plans that cover ABA for autism also cover it for other developmental needs. We’ll check your specific plan and let you know.

ABA therapy is generally covered for as long as it’s medically necessary. We monitor your benefits and keep you informed throughout your child’s care.

No. ABA therapy is covered under standard Health First Colorado through the EPSDT benefit for eligible children. A waiver isn’t required to start — it adds extra support on top of your existing coverage.
